Chinese Year of the Earth Dog

The Chinese have a unique calendar system commonly known as the ‘Farmers calendar’ or the ‘Hsia calendar’. It is a captivating system that provides us with information about prevailing elemental influences at any given point in time. It makes use of the following five elements; water, wood, fire, earth and metal - and their cycles, to determine the various aspects affecting the world in any period.

In Chinese astrology, the Dog, being the eleventh animal to hear the call of Buddha has many attributes that make up its character. Those born in the year of the Dog will generally find it easier to absorb information, are great observers and astute judge of people. They are protective, conservative, kind and fiercely faithful. Of the five different types of Dogs in the Chinese calendar, the Earth Dog is particularly democratic in nature and able to survive the challenges faced in life.

2018 is the year of the Earth Dog and it is influenced by the element of earth. So, this coming year is represented by the image of Yang Earth sitting atop another Yang Earth. In accordance with the cycles of the five elements – Earth supports Earth. This ordinarily suggests relative harmony throughout the year in international affairs. However, this arrangement brings about an exceptionally strong resolve to realise private agendas at all costs. Therefore whilst on the surface 2018 appears to be a year of cooperation, the desired results for international harmony, especially amongst religious groups, may not be forthcoming.

In Chinese astrology, the Earth Dog is also associated with strong and imposing mountain energy. Therefore, apart from the inflexibility, doggedness and resistance to change connected with this influence; we can expect to see tragedies related to earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, mining, underground metro and road accidents. It is also not a year to go mountain climbing particularly those born on the day and/or year of the dragon.

The Chinese calendar moves in cycles of sixty years. So, if we go back to the last time we experienced the Earth Dog year, 1958 we will find that there were many such occurrences, as described above, worldwide.

The year began with a 6.5 magnitude earthquake on 13 January in Alaska, with the strongest earthquake (8.3) occurring in Russia on 6 November of that year. In July of 1958 the Lituya Bay a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred producing a mega tsunami. Disaster struck 9 July when an 8.0 Richter-scale earthquake again hit the Alaskan coast, shaking free between 30 and 45 million cubic meters of rock and ice, into the water below, causing a monster wave of over 500 meters hurtling along at more than 160 kilometers an hour.

The fieriness hidden deep within the Dog, when released, can also generate fires, manifest in setbacks in air travel along with current nuclear issues not being resolved this year. Sixty years ago on 6 March, 23 of the 44 people on board the British European airliner perished after a failed take off at Munich airport. In April 8 men, employees of South Australia’s State Woods and Forests department were trapped while fighting a fire that raged for 17 hours and tragically lost their lives. In South Gippsland, Victoria, 1 February 120 years ago and another year of the Earth Dog, a bushfire raged on claiming 12 lives. Now referred to as Red Tuesday the fire destroyed an area of 2600 square kilometers of farmland, over 2,000 buildings affecting about 15,000 people, leaving 2,500 homeless.

The Earth Dog is particularly dry and as history shows us, in April 1958, it was reported by Chinese officials that peasants in the wheat-producing province of Hopei suffered the worst drought in 20 years. It was the beginning of a China wide famine, which ultimately resulted in the loss of many millions of lives.

There is always a flipside, so on a brighter note, 1958 enriched our world with some outstanding social initiatives and scientific discoveries along with breakthroughs and innovations in air and space travel. 2018 should not be an exception in these areas.

US Congress in July 1958 formally created NASA and America’s first communication satellite SCORE was launched in December of the same year.

During 1958, Eugene Parker proposed the idea of ‘solar wind’, with the term 'magnetosphere' later proposed by Thomas Gold. The beginnings of magnetospheric physics were also the beginnings of space physics. And during 1958 the US put its first satellite into orbit around the earth on 30 January of 1958 and it subsequently confirmed the existence of Van Allens radiation belt. Explorer 3 followed up this confirmation later that year. World physics then entered a new level of large-scale research characterized by space physics.

In 1958 the first prototype DC-8 made its maiden voyage. The phantom F4 was unveiled by McDonell-Douglas and soon became the mainstay of the US airforce and Pan Am introduced their 707 trans-Atlantic jet service in October of the same year. A major step for Australian aviation will take place early in 2018 with the first 17 hour direct flight between Perth and London on the 787 Dreamliner.

Ben Eiseman and his colleagues first described fecal microbiota transplantation in 1958 and in more recent years it has become widely recognised as an effective treatment for certain conditions. An Australian gastroenterologist Professor Borody first successfully performed the procedure on a patient in the mid 1980’s using it widely ever since. Now, Fecal Microbiota Transplant has also been reported to assist in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Acne, Obesity and type 2 Diabetes.

From a Feng Shui perspective, the energy of Fire is in the centre and this major influence is often indicative of prevailing events throughout the course of the year. Consequently, this is a very strong signal that there will be disasters relating to this influence particularly around the central and/or northern points of the world or indeed of a country or city. In addition with the clash that occurs between the Dog and Dragon it is also worth noting that incidences can occur in the Western sectors during the month of April; the month governed by the Dragon.

As far as the global economy is concerned….in general, there will be less optimism and even less opportunities in the stock market as we go through 2018. This industry will retract and extra caution should be exercised with investments.

The industries likely to perform particularly well during the year of the Earth Dog are those related to the elements of Wood and Fire. Some of the industries connected with the Wood element such as; forestry, media, magazines, newspaper, publishing, fashion, textiles, education, floristry and the environmental industry can expect to see strong activity and improved returns.

Those of the Fire element are; finance, entertainment, energy, oil and gas electronics, electrical supply and the airline industry. These enterprises will likely show an increased output with hard-earned returns. The exception could be the airline industry, which can expect more accidents and calamities. The airlines that innovate and have exceptionally high standards in training and maintenance will fare better.

Earth industries, which include; mining, insurance, chemicals and property will come up against very stiff competition. In these businesses, increased output and productivity will not necessarily result in a rise in profits so do not expect strong and quick gains. Instead, it would be sensible to adopt an attitude of working steadily and industriously towards the fulfillment of set goals and ambitions.

The businesses most likely to be challenged during the coming year are those of the Metal element such as banking, machinery and motor industry. They will report decreased profits. Finally, Water industries such as; transport, communication and shipping will not be particularly lucrative.

Traditional Chinese medicine has at its foundation the five elements and their cycles. Earth rules the Spleen and Pancreas. It also represents the stomach, muscle and cells. Consequently, health concerns relating to Earth such as cancer, along with diabetes and intestinal disorders will be foremost. Additionally, disorders relating to the Fire element such as heart and blood circulation conditions could increase throughout the year. The chance of obesity becoming an even bigger problem is very high throughout 2018.

Throughout 2018 there will be a clash that occurs for those born in the year of the Dragon (e.g. 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012). Consequently, those born in these years could feel a sense of unease and/or unrest. It is therefore advisable for those born during the year of the Dragon to be more cautious and avoid extreme activities, thereby doing their best to evade accidents during 2018. Whilst change, travel included, is acceptable, it is sensible to sidestep opportunities for traveling towards the northwest. As an additional precaution, wear a pendant of the Rabbit for some further symbolic protection.

For those born during the time of the Goat, (e.g. 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015) or Ox (e.g. 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009) it is advisable to also wear a rabbit pendant in order to minimize the influence of the earth penalty generated by the coming Dog year.

For those born in the year of the Dog; (e.g. 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006) this does not automatically equate to a good year and so it is also advisable to carry or wear a charm of the Rabbit.

Given that energy is in a constant state of flux, there are influences that vary with each passing year. Therefore, it is valuable to take precautions and implement some change in various sectors within your home or office.

With respect to Feng Shui you will find a troublesome influence coming from the North bringing with it difficulties and obstacles. If this part of your home or business is very active such as an entrance, family room, passage or living area then this energy needs to be dealt with by placing an all-metal wind chime or metal prayer bell in this area – particularly in the months of July and October.

In Feng Shui, good health is always given a top priority. For without your health and vitality it is difficult to maintain harmonious relationships and a vibrant career.

In 2018, the West resonates with the force of sickness. This is also particularly strong during the month of May. Therefore, you will require a placement of six metal coins in this area, and this is particularly important if your bedroom, kitchen or a major thoroughfare is located in that sector.

Another destructive and scandalous influence is also arriving from the East. Hence, it is best to place three bamboo stems or any plant that grows in water only, in a clear glass vase within the East sector.

The energy of arguments is located in the Northeast during the coming year and so it could be valuable to place a red object or the more traditional option of red paper in this area to help minimise this negative influence.

Finally, do not sit with your back against Northwest, especially whilst you are working. It is also not advisable to carry out large-scale construction work on established homes in the Northwest for the coming year. Place the Dragon Tortoise to face the Northwest as a symbolic measure of protection against the Grand Duke during 2018.

I hope you all stay well and happy during 2018 and that the coming Year of the Earth Dog will allow your plans to unfold bestowing your family and loved one with great success.
